Short hop today from Safford, NM to a Harvest Hosts stop. We were glad to roll on this sunny day after being semi-trapped in the trailer with heavy rain and winds over the Thanksgiving holiday. Even T’Chat was feeling a little stir crazy! Today’s drive was an easy 2 hours.

D.H. Lescombe is a 6th-generation winery. The founder, Herve, had a successful vineyard in Burgundy before he emigrated to the US and started this New Mexico vineyard in 1981. We tasted some delicious wines today. My favorites were the pinot gris and semillon. It’s a little startling (I don’t know why!) to find good wine in southern New Mexico.

A unique offering are their Hatch Chile Wines. They make a red chile wine and a green chile wine made with the famous New Mexican peppers. It seemed like a novelty, but we actually quite liked the green chile wine. It was crisp and dry with a hint of chile and a little kick.

Three other RV’s parked in the lot here at the winery near us, and our sommelier said they have at times as many as eight, visiting through the Harvest Host program. Good wine makes a popular waypoint.

We were treated to this brief but beautiful sunrise between rain showers at Roper Lake State Park.
