Relocation Reflections
Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the different areas we’ve considered for relocation—staying here in North Carolina, moving to Southwest Virginia or Colorado, or even returning to Central Oregon. Each option comes with its own set of trade-offs, and that realization has shifted the way I’m approaching our search. It’s no longer just about picking a location—it’s about balancing the multiple dimensions that matter most to us.
We’re drawn to Central Oregon because it’s familiar. We spent ten years there, built meaningful connections, and understand the landscape and culture well. Southwest Virginia appeals to us with its gentler climate, lush greenery, and strong local organic farming movement. Colorado offers something different—vast public lands, dramatic natural beauty, and endless recreational access. And staying where we are right now keeps us close to excellent sources of organic produce, pasture-raised meats, and other health-supportive resources.
As I’ve weighed these qualities, it occurred to me that perhaps there’s a place that weaves together elements from all of them. That line of thinking brought me back to the Willamette Valley in Oregon. It offers the familiarity of returning to Oregon, the green landscapes and abundant food systems of Virginia, and proximity to public lands—not to mention some fantastic biking. Yes, wildfire smoke is a concern, but heading out to the coast during smoke season might be a workable solution. Real estate prices in Oregon also seem more favorable at the moment compared to Virginia or Colorado, which adds another point in its favor.
